Types of Literature Essay 1) Novella A novella is the name given to a work that is longer than a short story, but too brief to be listed as a novel. Typically, most novellas can range from anywhere between 50 to 100 pages, though length can vary. Some literary critics characterize the maximum length of a novella to be 100,000 words. Today, the novella is rarely sold as an individual work. More frequently, several novellas are compiled into one book, or a novella will be grouped with a number of short stories by the same author. (Ex. John W. Campbell’s Who goes there? ) 2) Novel A novel is a fictional piece of prose usually written in a narrative style. Novels tell stories, which are typically defined as a series of events described in a sequence. The novel has been a part of human culture for over a thousand years, although its origins are somewhat debated. Regardless of how it began, the novel has risen to prominence and remained one of the most popular and treasured examples of human culture and writing. (Ex.Moby Dick by Herman Melville) 3) Poetry art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. (Ex. How to change a frog into a Prince by Anna Denise) 4) Drama is a literary composition involving conflict, action crisis and atmosphere designed to be acted by players on a stage before an audience. This definition may be applied to motion picture drama as well as to the traditional stage. (Ex. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare) 5) Short Story are written works that are usually fiction. They are sometimes known as micro fiction or flash fiction, and they are exceptionally short pieces that tell a story in a brief amount of space and time. Most short short stories are shorter than 1500 words, and some are even as short as 500 words. It is exceptionally difficult to tell a complete story in such a short amount of space, so these types of stories can be quite a challenge for writers. Literary magazines and other websites or print publications will often print such stories to fill a small amount of space at press time. (Ex. The Clever Fox)

Taylor is a very powerful novel about the Logan family living in Mississippi in the 1930's. The story is told through the eyes of nine-year-old Cassie Logan, who has to learn throughout the entire book, how harsh the world truly is for blacks. Cassie has to learn that it is a white man's world out there, and that black people don't have much of a say in what goes on in it. There are many events in this book which lead me to say how prejudiced our country was at that time. One thing that stays on my mind is the conflict between Cassie and Lillian Jean, a white girl about the same age as Cassie. During Cassie's first visit to the town of Strawberry, she accidentally bumps into Lillian Jean. It is then that Lillian Jean starts calling Cassie names (comparing Cassie's "nasty little self" with "decent white folk"), and makes her apologize. Big Ma and Charlie Simms, Lillian Jean's father, force Cassie to do so, and Cassie is also told to call her, "Miz" Lillian Jean. Cassie does not understand why this must be so, and the idea of calling someone "Miz", who is the same age as herself, hits Cassie hard. She takes her revenge by beating Lillian Jean up, and also blackmailing her. It is the first time that Cassie realizes that white and black children are treated differently. It shows how black children are forced to feel inferior to white children. Another cause of racism is where the whites hate the Logan family for owning their own land. Throughout the book, there are many efforts from the white people- mainly, Mr. Granger- to get... ...is saved for the moment, though because of the fact that he is black, it is unlikely that T.J. will be saved. This situation just goes to show that the idea that all men are created equal in the U.S., does not apply to the blacks in Roll of Thunder. I can see from Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, that racism affected the black people in the Deep South, years after slavery was abolished. Everywhere you turn, you can see that this issue was a daily part of their lives. The law turned a blind eye to crimes committed against blacks. The education system for blacks was second-rate. Black children were separated from whites from the beginning, thus making the blacks hate whites, as they grew older. Whites did not want blacks to feel in any way equal to them. Ethics are an important aspect of doing any n’ everything in one’s life. Be it your daily routine tasks/chores or your job or business environment. We should keep our integrity intact by providing consistency in goods & service. Secondly we should also abide by the regulations and restrain from un-ethical practices during any phase of our businesses in a socially responsible manner so that we can inculcate a sound business environment with least implication and externalities towards the surroundings.Overview:The Belmont Report states the duties of the National Commission on Health about different types of business practices and the ethical issues involved. The report provides a guideline as to how to prevent issues which harm the elements of the environment (including animals). Following are some major targets of the report; ? The basic ethical principles that should be taken into consideration while conducting any type of biomedical and/or behavioral research which inv olves any human subjects. ? To develop the guidelines to be complied so as to assure the particular research study is being conducted in accordance with those principles.The commission was also directed to consider; ? The boundaries between biomedical and behavioral research and the accepted and routine practice of medicine, ? The role of assessment of risk-benefit criteria in the determination of the appropriateness of research involving human subjects, ? Appropriate guidelines for the selection of human subjects for participation in such research, & ? The nature and definition of informed consent in various research settings (Folkman, 2000). Nonetheless scientific research has often produced substantial benefits to the society.It has also raised some problematic ethical questions. Public awareness grew on these issues due to reported abuses of human subjects in certain biomedical experiments (Saunders, 2004). This involved the physicians and scientists who had conducted biomedical experiments on war prisoners. This led to the legislation being made about any type of research involving human subjects that it would be carried out in an ethical manner. Three traditionally accepted principals regarding the implications are; Respect for Persons:Respect for a person includes two ethical convictions i. e. the individuals should be treated as autonomous elements/agents and that people with diminished autonomy should be given protection. Beneficence: Respect for people as individuals isn’t enough. We should also be considering making efforts to secure the well being of individuals. Justice: No individual or group of individual should be denied justice with regard to their right to have it. The benefit therefore to all individuals should be given in a ‘just’ manner without any bias and/or discrimination. Conclusion:Thus the Belmont Report provides a complete and detailed guideline to direct the way how research is being conducted and experimentatio n been done on any of the human subjects and strictly attempts the organizations to abide by it.
